July 2014, a national poll done by NPR with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health found that more than 1 in every 4 Americans say they had a great deal of stress in the previous month. Are you that 1 out of the 4? Stress leads to being unproductive, unreliable, and unhealthy.

Stress at work, home, or in relationships ultimately affects the way you perform at work or interact with friends and family. Your child is sick and you are worried about them, or when the school nurse will call you to come pick them up, making doctors appointments, the doctors bill, working the underpaid job to pay the bill, and then you can’t work the job that pays the bills because your are stressed about how to make ends meet. How about a job that requires deadlines, production, and quotas? You miss a few days due to illnesses, or understaffed, under trained, under poor leadership and the stress yields you unproductive.

It may be one of these situations, or all of them that either has you on company time looking for your next place of employment, taking your next sick day, or performing at a minimal level just enough to keep your job. This makes you unreliable.

Simply put stress deteriorates your health and can lead to death. It has physiological effect on EVERY system of your body. Imagine your body experiencing that flight or fight sensation once a day for fifty years. Well you don’t have to imagine because 76% cited money and work as the leading cause of their stress and 77%  of people regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress. How do combat stress leading to an unproductive, unreliable, and unhealthy life? Here are a few techniques to incorporate into your routine with the purpose of becoming habit.

1. Identify the stressor ( work, family, money, organization, friends, yourself)

2. Identify 2 solutions for every stressor ( just in case one solution cannot be performed you have a back up)

3. Commit to your plan for 90 days to form a habit

Stress Relieving Solutions:

  • Deep breathing
  • Stretching
  • Stress Ball
  • Journal
  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Take a course or read the book on Mindfulness
  • Physical activity
  • Hobby

Life happens and there are unexpected loss, illnesses, and situations. Yet, it is our response that dictates how it affects our productivity, reliability, and health. Try to be the 4 and not the 1 that has a great deal of stress.
